Metadata

Why we want to know about your data!

The WAPIS web-based index and related database are now under development. Many organisations hold and manage data relevant to WAPIS and also need access to summaries of other’s holdings.

The collection of ‘metadata’ - data about your data - is essential to evaluate the quantity, quality and nature of relevant information held by different organisations throughout the UK.
The next phase of the project will be to gain access to the actual data. The ‘metadata’ (summarising relevant data holdings) will be collated and will form an ‘index’ to information in the database, ultimately available over the Web.

The metadata is also needed to refine the development of the database itself. We would also like to acquire copies of some real data to put into the database for testing and demonstration purposes.

You may already have been contacted (see organisations below) or been involved in the project - we hope that you will think that the project is worth-while and that you will be able to spare the time to tell us about the data you hold. If you belong to one of the organisations listed below you will have been sent an Information Sheet and a ‘Metadata Proforma’. This form is essential to gather the basic metadata in a form compatible with the NBN and so link your data to the project.

If you know of a potentially relevant data source or organisation that does not appear to have been included then please let us know so that it can be included in the metadata process.
